Alumni Story: Daniel Kalnins – Digitally Transforming the Built World with Purpose

Since graduating from Peninsula Grammar in 2003, Daniel Kalnins has spent almost two decades pioneering digital transformation in the construction and infrastructure sectors. His passion is clear: to digitally transform the built world with purpose. With experience spanning engineering, head contractor, and client organisations, Daniel has played a key role in some of the world’s largest infrastructure projects—from feasibility through to operations and maintenance.

Daniel thrives in moments of transformation. Whether it’s building something new or rescuing a struggling initiative, he’s often called upon to set up digital strategies correctly from the start or to turn around those that have failed. His ability to combine technical insight with strategic leadership has made him a trusted figure in the industry.

As the Operations Director and Co-Founder of Salix, Daniel leads the company’s operating strategy and oversees execution across people, processes, product, and customer experience. But his impact goes beyond business. Daniel is deeply committed to a higher purpose: making vulnerability a strength in business. He believes that when organisations embrace authenticity, they unlock greater productivity, build stronger teams, and help individuals lead richer lives.

In his reflective piece, Personal Transformation not just Digital Transformation, Daniel shares how his professional journey has been deeply intertwined with personal growth. He writes candidly about the importance of self-awareness, the courage to evolve, and the power of leading with empathy.

Reflections from Peninsula Grammar

Daniel reflects fondly on his time at Peninsula, noting that while he was generally a good student, things truly began to click in Years 11and 12. “It was probably a combination of some amazing teachers and a willingness to pull my finger out and set myself up for university,” he shares. Aside from maths, he never felt like a naturally gifted learner, but he discovered that focused, consistent effort could deliver results. This lesson has stayed with him throughout his career: “A smaller, consistent effort will always be better than a few short bursts,” he says, referencing Jim Collins’ 20 Mile March from Great by Choice—a philosophy that has guided both his professional and personal growth.

Legacy and Connection to Peninsula Grammar

Daniel’s connection to Peninsula Grammar runs deep. He is the grandson of Bruce Clark, a profound figure in the school’s history. From 1961 to 1983, he played a foundational role at Peninsula Grammar, as a classroom teacher, the school’s first chaplain, Senior Master, Deputy Headmaster, and Acting Headmaster. His influence extended far beyond the classroom, mentoring students, staff, and families with warmth and wisdom. Upon his retirement, Bruce received a standing ovation from the entire school community, and his legacy continues to be felt today. In 2023, Reverend Bruce Clark was posthumously inducted into the OPGA Hall of Fame for Services to OPGA/TOPSA or Peninsula Grammar, with Daniel proudly accepting the medal on his behalf. Bruce’s legacy of service and leadership continues through Daniel’s own contributions to industry and community.

We look forward to seeing what’s next for Daniel as he continues to lead Salix, carrying forward a legacy of service, transformation and connection.
