From Classroom Chatter to National Commentary: Lachie Flannigan (Class of 2017)
Lachie Flannigan spent his school years with two constants: a deep love for soccer and a knack for talking—often when he wasn’t supposed to. Fast forward to today, and he’s turned both into a thriving career as a football (soccer) commentator.
After graduating in 2017, Lachie pursued a Communications degree at university while volunteering at Langwarrin Soccer Club in the National Premier League (NPL). On his very first day, he was asked a simple question: “Have you ever commentated before?” He hadn’t—but gave it a go anyway. Six years later, he hasn’t looked back.
Starting with local NPL matches across Victoria, Lachie’s voice soon reached national audiences. He’s commentated Australia Cup games on Channel 10 Sport, sharing the mic with former Socceroos—a surreal experience for any football fan.
Now based in Sydney, Lachie has made his debut in the A-Leagues, Australia’s top-tier professional soccer competition. A career highlight? Calling the electric Sydney Derby between Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers, and getting the chance to commentate matches featuring some of the Matildas’ brightest stars.
Off the mic, Lachie works as a social media producer for the A-Leagues, recently returning to Melbourne to cover both the Men’s and Women’s Grand Finals at AAMI Park.
Reflecting on his journey, Lachie says he’s grateful to have found a career where his once-disruptive chatter is now a celebrated skill.
“I’ve always loved talking about football. Now I get paid to do it—it’s a dream come true.”
